We are Working...

DukeEngage Colombia Director Dr. Tamera Marko (in red) and Comfama Analista Unidad de Cooperación Nacional e Internacional Maria Clara Echavarria Restrepo sign a convenio after a year of bi-national meetings and collaborative planning. This convenio officially honors the community partnership between Comfama, the Colombian entity which directs the cultural programming in the Parques Bibliotecas (Library Parks) where the DukeEngage students are now giving workshops.

DukeEngage Colombia students Gavin Best, Jessica Shuen, and Rachel Mcgowen (in pink) intensely discuss pedagogy strategies for the workshops each one will teach the following week in Spanish to urban communities at the Parques Bibliotecas (Library Parks) located in the Andes mountains throughout Medellín. This “pre-workshop” with the DukeEngage students is directed by DE Colombia directors Dr. Tamera Marko and Jota Samper.

Parque Biblioteca España from the Metro Cable (a gondola that is a part of the public transportation system connected to the metro) that you have to take to get to it. It's located in a really neat, but very poor, barrio, Santo Domingo. The library's services are 100% free (just like at all of the Parques Biblioteca) and to give the people access to information, technology, and resources that they would not otherwise have. This Parque Biblioteca is one of the most striking of all of the 5 Parques Bibliotecas. It is situated very high up on the mountain over looking EVERYTHING. There is such an incredible view. There are 3 huge buildings (effectively 8 stories each) all designed to look like black rocks nested against one another.

PROGRAMA COMPAÑERA/O

DukeEngage in Colombia Directors Jota Samper and Dr. Tamera Marko, and compañeras/os. This is taken after the first meeting with the compañeras/os. The Programa Compañera/o, created by the DE in Colombia Directors, pairs Duke students with university students in Medellin to establish relationships, encourage culture interchange, and provide support for learning about the city. Bitácora: Historias trenzadas

¿Qué es una bitácora?

Una bitácora es el diario de viaje, el historial que el capitán de un barco escribe, es la cartografía del viaje.

Es donde el capitán escribe o grava notas sobre las coordinadas de las estrellas la cartografía y también es un resumen de la vida cotidiana a bordo de un barco incluye historias sobre los otros tripulantes, viajeros y sucesos. También las preocupaciones los miedos las esperanzas y los pensamientos los planes y los sueños.

En nuestro contexto La Bitácora es sobre nuestras experiencias durante estas ocho semanas en Medellín, Colombia.

¿Qué anotaremos?

Realmente deseamos tres tipos de anotaciones:

Expectativas/pre-concepciones

Pensamientos, sentimientos, esperanzas, miedos, males entendidos y situaciones cómicas.

Resultados de las experiencias.

Estas anotaciones pueden ser en cualquier formato: escritos a mano en un diario, fotografías, videos, entrevistas-audio, menús, dibujos, o medios electrónicos como email, canciones.

¿Quién Anotará?

Nuestra esperanza es que cada persona que haga parte de esta experiencia dentro de las ocho semanas participe. Esto incluye los estudiantes las familias de los estudiantes, el cocinero, los directores los profesores, las comunidades, las familias en Medellín, el personal de los parques bibliotecas y los Compañeras/os

¿Como anotaremos?

Puede ser en cualquier medio (video, texto, grafico, auditivo, música, digital, fotográfico, etc.)

Privado: por lo menos una vez por semana o más diariamente seria ideal anotaras tus pensamientos, sentimientos y memorias de los que esta aconteciendo. Estas memorias son únicamente para tus ojos, este es la bitácora principal de la cual extraeremos fragmentos para la bitácora pública.

Publica: cada participante una vez por semana seleccionará un fragmento de tu bitácora para compartir con todos los participantes. Esta anotación debe ser entregada a los directores del proyecto antes de las 8:00 am cada lunes a través de email tameramarko@yahoo.com

Estos fragmentos (anotaciones) serán recopilados y organizados en alguna clase de bitácora holística. La idea agrupar todas estas experiencias que los participantes tuvieron durante el mismo periodo de tiempo (ocho semanas) desde perspectivas diversas.

Nuestra esperanza es que esta bitácora general pueda ser transformada a varios medios (web, exhibición, texto, video, imágenes, podcasts, etc.) Para audiencias en Colombia y en los Estados Unidos.

WHAT IS A PARQUE BIBLIOTECA?

This is not your average library. The 5 Parques Bibliotecas are state of the art spaces with internet rooms, reading lounges, theaters, and outdoor open plazas with 360° views of the Andes mountains encircling the city down below. They have been built in communities that had been isolated from educational resources. Now, they are where community learns, socializes and finds moments of quiet peace. They are a space open to everybody.

WHAT WILL STUDENTS DO?

#1 Culture and Arts Project

Play the clarinet? Love poetry? Skateboard? Want to teach English? Work on a radio station? Whiz at computer programming, blogging, design? Love classical American literature? Love math? Tell us your gift, your love, your dream and how you might collaborate with the Parques Bibliotecas to share your expertise and passion by giving community workshops teaching others how to do it.

#2 Historical Memory
Help communities traditionally not represented in official histories, record their own historical record in their own words in their own communities.

Other Highlights

Live in a Progressive Pilot Housing Project with lush gardens, walking distance to cafes, modern art museum, and to the Universidad Nacional Field trips every weekend in a city rich with art, music, dancing, & festivals.

Final Field Trip: Traveling workshop with Colombian university students to Cartagena & Important cities of the Caribbean Coast.
